Dr. Marievelisse Soto-Salgado is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC). She has a Doctoral degree in Public Health (DrPH) with Specialty in Social Determinants of Health and a Master’s in Science in Epidemiology (MS), both from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC), Graduate School of Public Health. She has been worked as epidemiologist and project coordinator of the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Bioinformatics Core (BEBiC) at the UPR/MDACC Partnership for Excellence in Cancer Research at the UPR-MSC since 2008, where she has taken an active role in providing epidemiology and biostatistics support to researchers and participants (undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows) regarding study design, power/sample size calculation, database preparation using REDCap, data management, and statistical analysis of population-based and clinical studies as well as secondary data analysis. In addition, she was a consultant in the area of epidemiology and biostatistics at the Department of Medicine at the UPR School of Medicine (2008-2018), providing consultation and support to residents of the Internal Medicine Residency Program in early stage study design, study implementation and statistical analysis. Dr. Soto-Salgado has authored and co-authored more than 40 publications in the area of epidemiology of chronic diseases such as diabetes and cancer, and infectious diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis C, HPV and Helicobacter pylori. Her research interests include cancer prevention and control among minority and underserved populations, especially to understand the social and structural factors that potentially influence the access to cancer care (e.g. preventive services and treatment). Dr. Soto-Salgado is currently a researcher in an R21 grant awarded in 2018 to Dr. Vivian Colón-López, researcher at UPR Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor at the UPR Graduate School of Public Health, where they will examine the effect of hurricanes Irma and Maria on cancer care disruption among patients with breast and colorectal cancer in Puerto Rico (NCI grant # R21CA239456).
